What Does It Mean to Follow Jesus? Lessons on Faith, Purpose, and Letting Go

Following Jesus is more than a religious decision. It is a daily choice to drop what is holding you back and trust in a God who already knows exactly where you need to go. Whether you are walking through addiction, loss, or simply feeling stuck, the call to follow Christ is an invitation to a completely new life.

What Did Jesus Mean When He Said “Follow Me”?

In Matthew 4:18-19, Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee and saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and His brother Andrew, casting their nets into the water. He did not ask them to finish what they were doing first. He simply said, “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.”

At once, they left their nets and followed Him.

That word “immediately” matters. It was not a slow transition. It was a complete turning away from one thing and a turning toward something greater.

What Nets Do You Need to Drop?

The nets Peter and Andrew dropped were their tools, their livelihood, their comfort zone. For many people today, the nets look different. They might be:

  • Addiction to drugs, alcohol, or destructive habits
  • Depression and low self-esteem
  • Toxic relationships and environments
  • Worry, stress, and financial fear
  • Disobedience and patterns of sin

Jesus is asking you to drop those nets. Not tomorrow. Not after one more try. Right now, immediately, and trust Him with what comes next.

Can God Really Deliver Someone from Addiction?

Yes. And the call to follow Jesus is especially powerful for those who are in the middle of their darkest moments.

When you are deep in addiction, it is easy to be religious without being transformed. You can go through the motions of faith without ever truly surrendering. But there is a difference between being religious and actually following Jesus. Following Him means picking up His cross, not just attending a service.

The moment you cry out to God for deliverance, that petition is heard. The angels are dispatched immediately. Someone has to be evicted from your life in order for the miracle to take hold, and that miracle begins the moment you wake up and choose to take one more step forward.

Why Do People Follow Jesus and Then Stop?

One of the most honest realities of the Christian walk is that people sometimes drift back into old patterns. They follow Jesus for a season, grow in their faith, and then slip back into what is familiar.

The enemy is always looking for a pinhole, a small opening, to pull you back toward the old version of yourself. He makes destructive things look appealing. He makes sin look satisfying. But the outcome of following the adversary is always the same: loss, breakdown, and destruction.

Romans 6:23 reminds us of the contrast between those two paths. God offers opportunities and blessings. The enemy offers contamination dressed up to look good.

What Does It Look Like to Genuinely Follow Jesus Every Day?

Following Jesus is not a one-time event. It is a daily practice. Here are some of the ways that genuine discipleship shows up in everyday life:

  • Prayer: Take time each morning and evening to speak with God. Give Him your difficulties, your temptations, your needs, and your pain.
  • Reading His Word: God’s Word has authority. It removes hatred, bitterness, and death. It speaks life into situations that look hopeless.
  • Quiet time with God: Jesus Himself went away to pray in quiet places. You need that too. Get away from the noise and let God speak to you.
  • Obedience: Sin leads to losses. When you walk in obedience, you position yourself to receive the blessings God has already prepared for you.
  • Loving God completely: Mark 12:30 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” A divided heart gives the enemy room to work.

How Does Following Jesus Help You Discover Your Purpose?

When you begin to follow Jesus consistently, something shifts. People around you start to notice. The witchcraft of their words and manipulation stops working on you. The generational curses that kept your family stuck begin to lose their grip.

You start to discover why you are here. Your purpose becomes clearer. And the things that once defined you, the addiction, the shame, the failure, become the very testimony that helps someone else find their way out.

God does not want the fingerprints of the world on His blessing for your life. He wants to be the one who gets the credit for your transformation.

What Happens When You Follow Jesus Through Suffering?

Following Jesus does not mean life becomes easy. Philippians 1:29 makes it clear that suffering is part of the journey. You may face rejection. You may lose relationships. You may go through financial hardship. You may be placed in uncomfortable situations.

But here is the difference: when you carry the cross of Christ, you are not carrying it alone. He knows every artery and vein in your body. He knows every direction you need to go. And He has already opened doors that no person can close.

As John 12:26 reminds us, where Jesus is, His servant will also be. That means wherever He leads you, whether it is a new career, a restored family, a ministry, or a season of healing, He is already there waiting for you.

How Do You Become a Fisher of Men?

Jesus told Peter and Andrew He would make them fishers of men. That same calling is on your life. Once you have been delivered, once you have walked through your own recovery, you carry something that no classroom can teach.

You become a disciple who can help others. Not through manipulation or performance, but through genuine service. That service can look like:

  • Helping someone who is struggling
  • Encouraging someone who has given up
  • Sharing God’s Word with someone who has never heard it
  • Comforting someone in grief
  • Teaching someone how to pray

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

That love is still available. For every person still in their addiction. For every family still praying for a breakthrough. God so loved the world means He so loves you, right now, exactly where you are.

Life Application

This week, identify one net you are still holding onto. It might be a habit, a relationship, a fear, or a pattern of thinking that is keeping you from fully following Jesus. Make a decision to lay it down, not perfectly, but intentionally. Start each morning with a simple prayer asking God to lead you that day, and end each night thanking Him for what He did, even if it was small.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

  • What net am I still carrying that Jesus is asking me to drop?
  • Am I being religious, or am I genuinely following Jesus with my whole heart?
  • Who in my life needs to see the transformation God has done in me?
  • Am I spending time in prayer and in His Word, or am I trying to follow Jesus without staying connected to Him?
  • What would it look like for me to pick up my cross this week and take one step forward?

Keep your mind on Jesus. Focus on His direction. You have a spiritual GPS that will guide you, even when you have gotten off course. Drop the nets. Pick up the cross. Follow Him.
